A MESSAGE of peace was the theme of the service at Spalding Remembrance Association’s service of thanksgiving in Spalding on Sunday.

About 250 representatives from the regimental groups that make up Spalding Remembrance Association were at the Peace Garden in Ayscoughfee Gardens for the parade on what was the anniversary of V–J Day.

Parade marshall was Roger Green of Holbeach Royal British Legion and the service was conducted by Dr Peter Gorton, Reader at St Mary and St Nicolas Church in Spalding. Association chairman Colin Jackman said there were between 12 and 14 standards, with the Royal British Legion represented by Spalding, Fleet and Boston branches.

Dr Gorton thanked the people who had served and those who are still serving to preserve peace around the world. He also touched on the recent riots, and prayed for those killed and those who had suffered loss and destruction.
