A club for elderly people in Holbeach is marking its 40th anniversary this year by inviting newcomers to one of its sessions.

Holbeach Age UK Pop-In Parlour on Church Street is a chance for men and women aged 55 and over to make new friends and avoid feeling lonely, bored and upset.

The parlour is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 9.30am till 11.45am when hot drinks, biscuits and cakes are served.

Pat Harland of Age UK in Holbeach said: “Back in 1973, the town doctor’s wife was concerned that many of the elderly had nowhere to meet and would instead hang around the grounds of All Saints Church, Holbeach, in all weathers.

“She thought it would help everyone if a place could be found for them to meet and relax in the warm.

“The old East Elloe Council agreed to loan the then empty library and the pop-in parlour came into being.”
