To be chosen by the people of the place in which I live and work, to speak for them in Parliament is a great honour; for this to happen for the fifth time isremarkable and humbling.
My outstanding success at the General Election would not have occurred without the extraordinary enthusiasm, commitment and skill of those – drawn from all parts of the constituency, all walks of life and ranging in age from 14 to (at least) 85 – who formed my campaign team.
Many voters told me that I was bound to win being the only candidate who, living locally, had a track record of working hard for our area, but I’ve never been complacent about victory, never regarded being your choice as an entitlement and never taken your support for granted.
To receive a fraction under 60 per cent of votes cast, a higher proportion than ever before, and so achieve one of the best
results of any Conservative contender confirms the many messages of support and expressions of affection that I received throughout the weeks I spent visiting every part of South Holland and the Deepings.
So the purpose of this letter is to thank all those who made my victory possible and, most of all, to thank every one of the 29,303 people that voted for me.
I’ve never been complacent about victory, never regarded being your choice as an entitlement
You can be sure that I will continue to work hard as your constituency MP – nothing in politics matters more to me.
