THE OLYMPIC flame will pass through five South Holland towns and villages on its procession around the country ahead of the 2012 London games.
Holbeach, Long Sutton, Moulton, Spalding and Whaplode will all be able to savour the excitement of the occasion as torchbearers make their way through as part of a 70-day, 8,000 mile route starting on May 19, 2012.
Residents are now being urged to start thinking about ways of marking the event and how they can get involved.
South Holland District Council deputy leader Coun Nick Worth said: “Having the Olympic torch coming through South Holland is a real coup which will allow everyone a chance to see it up close and for the first time really feel part of the 2012 Olympics.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed.”
And three-time Olympian Geoff Capes, who was born in Holbeach, veteran television commentator Stuart Storey, who grew up in Holbeach, and Paralympian gold medal winner Sally Reddin, who lives in Holbeach, have all welcomed the announcement.
The flame will also pass through Market Deeping, Thurlby and Bourne.
