A TEENAGER inspired by the film Cool Runnings is aiming to live out a sequel of his own – by pushing for a place in the British bobsleigh team.

Sam Thornburn (17), of North Road in Bourne, once joked to friends after seeing the 1993 film about the Jamaican bobsleigh team that Lincolnshire should have its own lineup.

Then, after Bourne-based Graham Richardson, former GB sledder and coach of the Dutch national team visited his school, Sam decided to follow in the footsteps of the film and give the sport a go.

The Bourne Grammar School sixth former is now bidding to take a place in the GB youth team for the 2012 Youth Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

Sam said: “Bobsleigh seemed like a high adrenalin action sport that would be a lot of fun and a unique experience.

“After Graham came into school I saw there was a spot on the gifted and talented trial for the GB youth team so I went along.

“I got put through for further trials and got to go to Austria to have a go on a real course.”

Sam goes to Bath once a month to practice the sport and is on the lookout for sponsors to help him carry on his dream.
