News of South Holland men in Mercian disaster

Sgt William Butler, serving with the 1/1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry, was one of those wounded when the Mercian troopship was hit by a German U-boat 100 years ago.

The son of Mr William Butler, of Surfleet, had been wounded in both legs and his to his head.

Trooper A C Denton (23), (right) of Gedney Marsh, was one of the 23 men killed aboard the ship when it was struck off the coast of Algeria.

The son of Mr and Mrs James Denton was with the Lincolnshire Yeomanry.
