A 61-year-old man from the Spalding area had to be rescued from the river in town by fire and rescue staff using a ladder and waterproof rope.

Police and specialist teams from Spalding and Boston found the man waist deep and struggling to get out of the river at about 9.40pm last Thursday.

He was taken to Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, to be treated for the effects of being in cold water but it is not known how he originally got there.
