MP JOHN Hayes has confirmed that jailed Craig Jackson resigned as his aide two weeks ago.

Mr Hayes, who suspended part-time Parliamentary assistant Jackson when the matter first came to light, confirmed that the former South Holland district councillor no longer works for him.

He said: “Craig was suspended from my employment when this matter first arose and since then he has resigned.

“This incident did not relate to his work for me – it was part of a family dispute – nevertheless if you have committed a crime you have to face the consequences.

“Justice has been done and it would be inappropriate for him to continue working for a member of Parliament and he recognised that by resigning.”

Mr Hayes said he has not seen Jackson since his arrest in early February, but he has spoken to him on the phone “two or three times”.

He added: “I’m not familiar with the details of this case apart from two or three calls from Craig to keep me to up-to-date with what was happening as his employer.

“These things are always a personal tragedy and I feel very sorry for Craig’s mother, who I know is not in the best of health.”
