Moulton resident Valerie Venables won a poetry competition organised by The Lincolnshire Live Poets Society.

Valerie entered the competition for a poem called Lincoln is Great after seeing it publicised in The County News.

Valerie, who has previously had books published and was on the quiz team featured on BBC’s Eggheads, says: “Much to my surprise and delight, I won the competition. On World Poetry Day, my poem was read out in Castle Square in Lincoln, and I was presented with a framed certificate.”

The poem was read by Michael Blackburn, a published poem who is also a lecturer in Poetry and Creative Writing at the University of Lincoln.

The reading was followed by a ‘poetry marathon’ in which the verses of runners-up were also read.

Valerie said: “The Lincolnshire Live Poets Society is trying to set up other groups. Since I won they are thinking there might be enough people in our area to set up a group, possibly in Spalding or Holbeach.”

The Lincolnshire Live Poets’ latest book was being sold at the event to raise money for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
