Long Sutton Urban District Tribunal had refused an application for exemption from military service in 1916.

Made by Mr J Tiller, a showman of Long Sutton, it was made on behalf of his son, James Tiller, who was well known locally.

James was described as “an artist, ventriloquist, electrician, pianist, van builder, carver, cornet player, arranger, scene artist, music composer, marionette operator and speaker...” and the “mainstay of his family”.
