South Holland District Council chief executive Terry Huggins has denied being forced out of his £124,000 job by pressure from council leaders.
Mr Huggins said “personal reasons” were behind his decision to quit as chief executive of the council at the end of January 2013 as reported in the Spalding Guardian last Thursday.
He refused to comment on the failure of Spalding’s £7.5million Red Lion Quarter, the subject of a 63-page report adopted by the council in July, but confirmed that it had no influence on his decision to leave.
Mr Huggins is also quitting his post as chief executive of Breckland District Council which he has jointly managed with South Holland District Council since August 2010.
“I’ve worked in local government for over 40 years and it’s time for me to do something new with my life and hand over the baton to someone else,” Mr Huggins said.
“It was my decision to leave because I’ve reached a stage in my life where I want to look a little more at my work-life balance and also to try my hand at working for myself in areas of training and development.”
Mr Huggins (60) joined South Holland in 1997 and became chief executive in 2003 during which time he helped set up Compass Point Business Services, a partnership with East Lindsey District Council.
He was also involved in forming South Holland Homes to provide more affordable housing in the area.
