Why all the fuss about the field?

ALTHOUGH I sit on the fence with the proposed Sir Halley Stewart development I have begun to question what all the fuss is about.

I find the game of football (and I do refer to this on a national level, not a local level) no more than a game for overpaid hooligans who don’t know how to play a straight game without cheating. But, having said that, I understand the need for the facility to be available to Spalding United FC.

But why does it need to be in the centre of town? How many people actually walk to see a game? I imagine the majority use a car to get into town so why can’t they use said car to drive them out of the town, thus avoiding snarling up the streets more than they already are.

Now, I don’t know about most of your readers but I’ve never been allowed access ‘to enjoy the green, open space’ of the Sir Halley Stewart field as bequested to the inhabitants of the Spalding.

As you report, it has been home to Spalding United FC for the past 90 years. During my time on this planet the only other use I remember the field being used for is the flower parade.

I don’t understand why everyone is getting worked up about something that is not available to anyone other than a football supporter (give or take a social club or two using the clubroom).

As a local council taxpayer I find it galling that I am subsidising Spalding United FC to have the sole rights to the Sir Halley Stewart field so forgive me for not getting too upset that someone has the vision to turn this Godforsaken town into something resembling a place someone may want to visit!

I would hardly call the walled Sir Halley Stewart Field 'character of the town'. How often have people gone into Boston, Peterborough, Kings Lynn etc as they cannot get what they want from Spalding? Bringing investment and jobs ~ surely this is progression. I say let's see what the plans are and make our decisions from there, but this, if the developers achieve what they say they will, should be beneficial to communities in Spalding and character is as much driven by community as it is by buildings and green space.

Council will do what they like no matter what anyone says but we certainly dont need more shops when half the town is boarded up and we already have Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Co-op and then plenty more within a few miles drive so we certainly dont want another supermarket.

Give us one good reason they should turn it into some kind of a shopping centre, you call it progress, absolute chaos, leave some charactor of the town, and do something with the red lion quarter seems like a wasted space.
