We'd love to see old-style signs

Congratulations to Dave Sharman for the excellent refurbishment of Cowbit's village sign (Spalding Guardian, April 23).

I'd love Spalding to welcome visitors with something similar. After all we still have our wooden town sign in Hall Place.

I asked the question about Spalding's "missing" signs last year on behalf of the Civic Society, and got a full and honest reply from Mike Chapman.

Despite reader's thinking they have been "lost", South Holland District Council have not re-installed them for the last couple of years as they are in a bad state.

These wooden signs have been around since the '70s, and are understandably quite weather-worn and rotten.

I'd like to see facsimiles made in either cast iron or aluminium, but I know they would soon be stolen to be sold for scrap not long after they were erected. Maybe SHDC could make fibreglass copies instead?

I'm sure the county council could be persuaded to help to contribute towards the cost of replacement.

Either way, I'm sure the majority of Spaldonians would love to see the old style of signs re-instated.

Norfolk makes a feature of carved village and town signs, and I'm sure they would be a welcome addition to the cultural landscape South Holland.
