SHOPS: What exactly are councils doing to help?
I was very interested in reading the front page story in Thursday’s Spalding Guardian urging locals to support independent businesses in town. What I would like to know is, what exactly are the local council doing to support this?
My partner is a local business owner on Swan Street, and not only have our business rates increased over and above inflation this year, we are now forced to park in the bus station car park every day, as we have received a fine for parking in the same place we have done since taking over the business over 18 months ago now the enforcement officers walk the streets with a vengeance.
I was ticketed yesterday for parking ten minutes over the allocated time of one hour. A local pension age resident who lives behind our business has no parking, she also uses the lay by opposite the Lincolnshire Gallery to park.
Will she be ticketed every day or are the council going to force a pensioner to pay the £260 per year for parking in what the Guardian Angel commented on as a car park that isn’t even gritted in this severe weather?
With business rates and parking, our costs will increase by nearly £600 this year alone. Surely it would make sense to issue local residents and business owners parking permits with a nominal charge to assist in this matter.
