Sad demise of truly independent view
I spoke to Chris Brewis just as he was about to attend a funeral, presumably in the stress of the moment he has forgotten that he promised to ring me, nevertheless I thank him for a clear explanation why Lincolnshire First has been formed by erstwhile Independents (Spalding Guardian, April 23).
However, his statement that "absolutely nothing got done" when councillors voted as individuals is clearly unfounded.
I accept that it was more difficult to get developments and projects passed three decades ago.
But having experienced some of the recent efforts when the power of the "party vote" has got things through on the nod, I doubt that the present system is an improvement on the days when councillors worked for the benefit of the community without pay or political party involvement.
It seems that, if substitutes are allowed in committees (as outlined by Coun Brewis), they must be permitted to express their views and possibly vote, in which case it is not possible for the absent Lincolnshire First councillors to maintain their true independent quality within the meaning of the word, which in my view is a sad demise.
