Plea for Respect Agenda over area’s grot spots

Coun Gamba-Jones at one of the grot spots.

Following on from the recent, but misplaced, calls for the council to clean up the Welland, I would like to make my own plea on behalf of our district.

Along with a reporter and photographer from the Spalding Guardian, I recently toured Spalding town centre, looking at a number of grot spots.

Afterwards, I set out to find out who owned the sites, in order to get them cleaned up.

On the one hand I was pleased to find that none were the responsibility of the district council.

On the other, I was dismayed to find that, as well as being in private ownership, they had been blots on our landscape for some time.

Can I therefore make a plea to all those who own all such sites in our district, to make a commitment to getting their land cleaned up and to keeping it that way for the future.

This would be part of an ongoing and long term Respect Agenda for our district.

It would also be an excellent start to our preparations for celebrating our Queen’s Diamond Jubliee at the beginning of June.

COUN Roger Gambba-Jones

Cabinet member for Waste and

Recycling, South Holland

District Council

I stand corrected, although on this occasion it does appear that Gamba-Jones didn’t have a bin bag to hand – wouldn’t we have seen a photograph of him had he done so? I agree, this is not a Council problem and I’m pleasantly surprised to hear that community service criminals (lads is being far too sympathetic) are being used as cleanup crews. Pity we don’t see them outside town centres. I think most of us would agree that the root cause of this problem, and many others, is likely to include decades of appalling parenting and an education system that ignores social responsibility and ethical standards. Alas, something I fear will only continue to fail generations to come. Meanwhile and back in the real world, here’s a thought… Take any route from the likes of a McDonalds and the roadside will be littered with their takeaway packaging. Maybe what’s needed is a litter levy on their customers and those of any other retailer who do likewise. Oh to be a benevolent despot.

I have seen Councillor Gamba-Jones with a black bin bag picking up rubbish in parts of Spalding, so I wouldn't be so quick to criticise. He is doing his best, but to be honest, Spalding needs to be cleared of litter dropping louts - both English and immigrants. The Council and Councillors can only do so much. Would you like a council tax increase to pay for the extra litter pickers etc? No. Everyone would soon moan. We have to be realistic. There is no doubt that Spalding is becoming grotty, but that is due to the people living in it, not the Council. I think they do a good job all things considered. I have recently seen groups of community service lads clearing up the mess in Wygate Park. We need more initiatives like this.

Don't agree #5! Why should the tax payer have to pay to for rubbish to be cleared from private land? These irresponsible land owners should be made to do it with hefty fines imposed if they don't do it within a set time and more fines for re-offending.

So you didn’t clear the mess while there Gamba-Jones, or even take a cleanup crew with you. Doesn’t say much for your sense of social responsibility, but you do have a good eye for a photo op. Typical politician.

In other Council Districts they issue things called enforcement notices to the owners of such land.

If I was there at that above location I would have taken sufficient refuse sacks and picked it up, it wouldn't matter to me who's responsibility it was, why not set the example, Sir? But hey ho, we can always just write letters and make plea's, after all this is the society of 'I'm not doing it, it's not mine' - and this is the example those above set
