MP works hard for those he represents

Regarding expenses claimed by MPs (Lincolnshire Free Press, April 7), I must say a few words in his defence.

Mr Hayes rightly states that he maintains two offices, one in Westminster and another within the local area, while rightly keeping his home for private family use.

He spends a great deal of time supporting local groups, particularly through his position as Shadow Education Minister, which extends beyond schools into other youth projects while at the same time not neglecting those of other age groups.

When writing to me, he even adds encouraging little notes in his own hand when he signs the letters. Mr Hayes is a true Christian who lives out his faith.

Even during the long Parliamentary recesses he still takes time to work here for those he represents while other notables enjoy hospitality from the rich and famous, even though they claim to be representing the common man.

When I was a constituent of Quentin Davies, his only response to my plea for help was a two paragraph brush-off and a lecture.

Like many MPs, Mr Hayes could earn more outside Parliament, just as we have seen recently with bankers etc. There is no logical reason why he should subsidise his work out of his own pocket. Noblesse oblige should not be detrimental to his own family.
