Money from developers should go to the people, not Spalding United
So skilled and highly qualified commercial developers have promised Spalding better green open space when they build on the Sir Halley Stewart Field?
I have several questions:
1 – When did any developer give something back before taking something?
2 – Spalding United, who have paid a peppercorn rent for time immemorial, for the place left in trust for the local people of Spalding, have led the way by selflessly taking an option on cheap land somewhere else to allow the developer access to the land. Where did they get the money from? Should a single penny come from our friendly developer then I want the money back to the people of Spalding, and not to a sports club who fail at every level and offer nothing.
3 – Is this really to do with building yet more shops to finally destroy wour town centre, or is this an elaborate plan by South Holland District Council to redevelop the Castle Complex?
4 – Should the people of Spalding have the opportunity to decide the future of the field?

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 08:42 AMWho has paid for the upkeep of this field? Is it money from just Spalding council tax payers or South Holland council tax payers? Seems to me Spaldonians think that as usual all rewardsand benefits should go to them and sod anyone else in the district!

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 01:10 PMSome good points raised here. My comments on a referendum are elsewhere. I was dismayed at first when the Localism Act abolished the National Standards for Councillors but pleased when I found it created a new offence of failing to declare a finantial interest by Councillors. This is of course a criminal offence and if convicted will trigger the proceedure of the Proceeds of Crime Act. This really is, if I can use Roy Jenkins words, "a peice of draconian legislation". Of course the Council want to build on Castle Fields, judging by the budget debate the new homes grant from central government is a vital revenue stream and the fact that aNational builder has been brought in to the Woolram Wygate area as a "latch lifter" I expect a new proposal soon.
