HISTORY: 4th territorial used drill hall

In the issue of December 20, Bob Clarke asked which battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment used the drill hall as its base up to and at the outbreak of the 1914 war.

I have been doing research on Lincolnshire in World War One and can tell him that the drill hall was the headquarters of the regiment, but that it was specifically used by the 4th (Territorial) Battalion.

According to the Lincolnshire Chronicle of Friday, 7 August, 1914: “From every quarter news is coming to hand of the loyal response to the call to embodiment. Lincoln has been no exception.

“Here men have been not only willing but eager to rally to the colours and take their part in defending their country in the hour of need.

“The embodiment of the 4th Battalion Lincoln (Territorial Army) commenced on Wednesday and throughout the day the drill hall, the headquarters of the regiment where all the companies were ordered to assemble, had been exceedingly busy.

Due to the lack of space, soldiers were to be billeted in the municipal technical school, St Hugh’s Hall, St Martin’s Hall, the RC Day School, the Oddfellows Hall, St Martin’s School and the Newland Congregational Schoolroom. The men would sleep on the floor.
