Free Press 9-2: Reduce the traffic

THE Lincolnshire Free Press, February 2, special report "Get 'Standstill'Spalding Moving" asked for solutions.

There is a very obvious one, that the report missed. Reduce the traffic!

If the town had better public transport, more cycle paths/lanes, a car sharing scheme and a car club, traffic would be less, leaving road, and parking, space for people who have to drive.

Lots of studies have shown that some people would cycle, walk, car share or use public transport if facilities were improved and if they were supported by their employers.

Many businesses have done so-called travel plans to widen the travel choices available to their staff and visitors.

Again, studies have demonstrated that "drive alone" car use can be cut by nearly 20 per cent through good travel plans.

The new Johnson Community Hospital is implementing one. The town's schools have done them, which must have helped reduce the school run. Most councils, as large employers, have done them not least to set an example.

A Government White Paper urged this of councils in 1998. But South Holland District Council hasn't done one yet.

It should be doing one and working hard, jointly with Lincolnshire County Council and local employers, to get alternatives to car travel improved and traffic reduced.
