Free Press 9-2: Where are the jobs?

I FEEL I have to write about the news of more jobs on local projects boosting the economy ("Big projects to boost the economy", Spalding Guardian, Januray 28.).

Yes, jobs might be made, but how many of these are going to be for us lower skilled workers?

I have lived locally all my life and am finding it hard to find any vacancies that are production or of a factory nature. The local papers, which used to have these advertised in have none. And why I ask?

Well, as I have found, and without sounding too racist, the agencies that seem to have taken over all these contracts are mostly European run or seem to prefer them to us locals.

I have even called back to one in a fake voice 20 minutes later and was asked for my details, having previously been told that there were no vacancies going. It's madness!

So with the news that jobs are going to be made, and many are higher paid and not for us unskilled workers I ask what is the local economy going to do to help us? Can we have local jobs for local people in the factories? I think not.

Maybe, like so many others have said, Spalding is not the place to be any more.
