Don’t judge Corbo book by its cover
There is an old saying that “You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover” – a saying that I might suggest opponents to the proposed Holland Market development in Spalding should consider before putting their feelings into print.
I have no doubt whatsoever that Holland Market owners Corbo have done some serious homework and research before committing themselves to a project which will certainly be a very costly one.
Other than knowing that their plans centre on the Sir Halley Stewart Field and the possible relocation of Spalding United Football Club, none of us have any idea of the full extent of their re-development plans. I have a gut feeling that we all may well be pleasantly surprised.
It is common knowledge that the playing field in question was bequeathed to the town by Sir Halley Stewart and is governed by a trust.
I would further suggest that Corbo, in conjunction with South Holland District Council, have fully investigated the status of the Trust otherwise they would not be progressing, or even have started any dialogue relating to re-development.
I eagerly await the publication of their plans.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 04:58 PMNot sure I follow your argument here@1. No Spalding is not a city like Peterborough ( thank goodness) but I don't know why you think this development will neccessarily make Spalding a worse place to live in. As long as better alternative sports facilities are provided, carparking space is retained or improved & green areas are provided along with the 'shops, more shops & better shops' I can only see it would add to the towns attraction bringing in those out of towners' from the likes of Pinchbeck..My daughter lives there.) We have to trust our council ,who at the end of the day, we elected, to look after our interests. If you can't do that why not stand for election yourself next time.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 12:03 PMI understand what you are saying. You're right to the extent that we should wait until the full and final plans are released before making an end judgement whether to oppose or support, but, by then it may be too late. I also feel you're quite trusting of fat cat, money hungry, quick profit developers, whereas I am not. I note too that you live in Pinchbeck, do you think you may feel differently if you had to live here in Spalding near the development, as the way things stand currently, as a Pinchbeck resident you stand to gain regardless of the knock on affects of a poor development? We, the residents of Spalding will not have the luxury to travel away from the Town and outside of Spalding each day, you will, so to an extent it would be the equivalent of us taking a shopping trip to Peterborough in the sense that all we want to see are shops, more shops and better shops and, as is understandable, have little regard for the suffering of it's residents, like yourself with Spalding. Would you say this was a fair analysis of where your view is originating from and can you maybe see why some Spalding residents fiercely oppose any such plans on this basis? Spalding is a market Town, the residents understand that, Peterborough is a city, if residents outside of Spalding and indeed those within it wish to see development of chain stores and such like then surely they would be better off backing plans to do something in a city? The developers plans, to date, have shown no acknowledgement of wanting to regenerate a 'market Town'. If that changes then I will reconsider my position, but as things stand it is nothing more than money, money, money and nill regard for the people of the Town.
