...but the river bank is not even our responsibility!
Whilst I can fully understand Mr Crowder’s disgust at seeing litter and rubbish in the River Welland, it is the louts and yobs who despoil our environment that should be ashamed, not the district council.
South Holland District Council is not responsible for the river, nor for the river banks – both are the responsibility of the Environment Agency.
However, the district council realises how important the river is to the people of Spalding and how much enjoyment people get from walking along and sitting on its banks.
We therefore care for the river banks as though they were part of the public open space areas we are responsible for.
Also, when we can spare the resources and always in preparation for the Flower Parade, SHDC deploy a boat and up to four people to clear rubbish from the river and its banks, even though this again is not the council’s responsibility.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 09:39 AMCould the council ask the environment agency for a grant to cover the cost of keeping the river and the banks through Spalding clean and clear? It would provide more local employment and is greatly needed.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 09:12 AMI wish the river was made a greater asset to the town. It could and should be its shining glory. The Council need to do more.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 01:50 PMIt is very pleasing to see our Council is trying to keep the town and river tidy. It would help if the persons who through the items in the river had more thought and careing about their enviroment. But I feel that although the council is trying to do the right thing with the river, when I phone customers services regarding raw sewage coming out of a manhole cover in Hole In The Wall Passage, the lady on the switch board said she had seen it also, but had done nothing and the lady at customers services told me it was noything to do with the council, and I should call Anglia Water. As I did not have the number on my mobile phone in the middle of town I asked her if she would call them. Her response. "Its nothing to do with me" I arrived home a hour later and contacted Anglia Water my self, in the mean time people were haveing to walk through this sewage. So its sad to see two employees of the council do not have the pride in their town they should have all for cost of one phone call.
