Bridge should be treasured
I have learned that a picturesque wooden footbridge (Jobsons Bridge), which spans the Vernatts Drain near Pode Hole, and which has been in existence for at least 50 years, is rotten and in need of renewal.
I am very concerned to discover that it is to be replaced, not by a like for like bridge, but by an all metal structure of single span design and with dimensions that are huge compared to the present one.
Sam Edwards at Lincolnshire County Council gave me some background information on what appears to be a complex situation.
LCC owns the bridge and the banks but would be prevented from rebuilding on piles, as is the present arrangement, by the authorities which are in charge of the water and riverbed.
The local residents, myself included, have not been consulted, considered or even informed of what has been decided.
The bridge is not only a useful route into Spalding from this area and well used but it is a visual feature which enhances the landscape and should be treasured as such.
