Agency needs to start caring for our river

Thanks to Councillor Gambba-Jones for pointing out that the littered River Welland and its banks problem is not the responsibility of the South Holland District Council.

May I then ask that someone from the Environment Agency “puts on their thinking cap” and addresses the problem of litter in and around the river?

It is the responsibility of us all to respect our environment but clearly many do not.

It is not good enough to shrug one’s shoulders and see a problem and ignore it. It won’t just simply go away.

I would ask that the Environment Agency think seriously about starting an ongoing programme to care for the river and the problem of litter in the water and on the banks and respond to the letters printed in your newspaper recently, which have highlighted this problem.

May I also point out that Phillida Dawson’s “readers’ picture” of the river may, in this instance, show clean banks but does indeed show rubbish laying atop the water, along the water edge where rubbish and flotsam usually collects, and, sadly, is left.

Many thanks for printing our letters concerning this sad problem.

isn't gambba jones in charge of shops in town and giving them the nod ? i ask this as the council leader mr porter told me when i put in an objection against the eastern european shop in pinchbeck road he told me it was nothing to do with the council !!! with this attitude there is no wonder our town is in a mess. and yes..this links into the above story as how many english bottles and cans do we see ?? and now we have surprise surprise a raid in one of these shops selling illegal fags. well i tell you now...its gonna come to a head soon where locals will protest..just like boston will. enough is enough mr porter and your cronies...listen to us...or learn the hard way. your killing our town with excuses after excuses.

There's a culture amongst out Council of 'It's not us it's them' - the Council is responsible for our Town, when in situations that they do not have authority over, they should take the initiative and compassion to make it their business and fight to rectify any problems - what on earth is congratulatory about a Councillor passing the buck like a child who doesn't want to play with the ball any more? certainly no 'three cheers' from me for Cllr. Gambba-Jones or any of his colleagues for their childish attitudes.

If the EA can't care for the river they should pay SHDC to do it and create some more local jobs.
