World Book Day special

AWARD-WINNING retailer Bookmark has teamed up with the Spalding Guardian for an exclusive World Book Day offer.

Each week The Crescent store offers a cut-price book to our readers but as part of the annual celebration of reading, marked in the UK and Ireland today, we are offering a bumper deal.

Three lucky readers will win 100 worth of books each – selected by publishers – perfect to give a springtime freshen-up to your book collection.

And don't worry if you miss out out as this week we are offering ALL readers 20 per cent off a book of their choice at Bookmark (excluding one's already on offer) – valid from today until March 28.

The amazing deal comes as part of the Spalding store's drive to increase the profile of World Book Day in this country.

World Book Day, recognised by UNESCO, traditionally takes place on March 4 in this country, because the worldwide date of April 23 often clashes with the school Easter holidays.

The April 23 connection was first made in Spain in 1923 and is the date authour Miguel de Cervantes died according to the Gregorian calendar.

The event has become an established part of the calendar as part of St George's Day celebrations in Spain with men giving roses to their lovers and women giving them a book in return and half the yearly book sales in Catalonia happen at this time.

Bookmark owner Christine Hanson will visit Spain for this year's celebrations.

She said: "It's the equivalent of Valentine's Day and is the biggest book selling day of the year. It's not just shops either the streets are lined with book stalls and it is a big festival of books and love which is really nice.

"This offer is our way of helping to celebrate World Book Day here in a bigger way."

The main aim of World Book Day in this country has been to promote reading and a love of books with children - and support packs are sent to schools, with pupils each getting a 1 voucher.

Children re-deem the voucher against six specially selected books or any other book at participating retailers but thanks to Bookmark we are throwing open the fun to adults too.

Donations for our gift-pack prizes kindly come from publishers Random House, HarperCollins, Orion, Penguin and Little, Brown who are keen to spread the reading bug far and wide.

Pick up a copy of the Spalding Guardian for details of how to win books and for your 20 per cent voucher.
