What are your thoughts about South Holland?

WHAT comes to mind when you think of South Holland?

That’s the question the district council is posing as it aims to come up with a suitable “strap line” for its community cohesion strategy and a front page image for a document on the area’s heritage.

People from the council, police, health and education services, which make up the Rural Action Zone (RAZ), put their heads together to consider what makes South Holland life at its recent meeting at Spalding Post 16-Centre.

The council wants to devise a policy to knit together the district’s different cultures and age groups, emphasising the good things about South Holland.

A brainstorming session at the meeting came up with the following strengths –

l Historical, friendly market towns

l An industrial landscape with tractors

l Panoramic views, wide horizons, beautiful sunsets

l Geometric fields and drains

l Dynamically diverse population

l People live here by choice in relaxed communities

At the meeting Heritage Lincolnshire’s Tom Lane said the aim is to “make South Holland people as proud of South Holland as Yorkshire people are of Yorkshire” – although he believes they can achieve more.

He said throughout its history South Holland has always embraced newcomers as its landscaped has evolved.

RAZ chairman Nick Worth said: “We have had a constantly changing population over the years and the trends of recent years are nothing new but it is something we want to address.

“It will be interesting to have some feedback about what people think of when they picture South Holland.”

People at the meeting argued that an image of a tulip was no longer relevant to represent the district because fields of the flowers are no longer commonplace.

The council will also team up with the Spalding Guardian to launch the South Holland Pride Awards to celebrate the people who work hard to benefit the community.

Keep an eye on the paper for more details soon.

l What sums up Spalding in 2009?

Is it time we left the tulips behind or should we highlight our heritage more?
