Turbine plan could 'open floodgates' in The Fens

BUILDING wind turbines at Tydd St Mary Marsh could "open the floodgates" for a forest of them in The Fens, says MP John Hayes who is now calling on the project to be scrapped.

Mr Hayes chaired a public meeting in the village hall about the proposal to build seven 127 metre-tall turbines at Grange Farm, between Tydd St Mary and Tydd Gote.

Representatives from RES, which hopes to build the wind farm, spoke along with Deeping St Nicholas couple Jane and Julian Davis, who say they have been plagued with noise from turbines close to their home at Deeping St Nicholas.

At the end of the night Mr Hayes took a poll of the people at the meeting and 25 voted against the plans and 13 in favour.

This follows a similar poll at a previous meeting in Sutton Bridge, where all but two of 30 people attending a public meeting voted against the turbines.

Mr Hayes says the meetings show public opinion is against the turbines and he will write to RES asking them to withdraw the plans and to South Holland District Council to express his views.

Mr Hayes said: "They would be the biggest structures ever to be erected in the Fens – do we want a forest of those? This is monstrous really and we don't want to open the floodgates."

RES believes Grange Farm is a "very good site" for a wind farm based on investigations into the site and its environment and ecology over several years.

It says the site will generate significant amounts of green energy and RES is proposing a 28,000 per year community fund for projects in the area.

Project manager Helen Hall said: "Since we announced the project in March, the plans have been well received by the local community, and we have had a great deal of interest in the benefits that the wind farm will bring to the area.

"After a period of public consultation, we have now submitted a planning application for the scheme to South Holland District Council, and the decision as to whether to consent the scheme now lies in their hands, through the usual democratic processes."
