Tributes to lovely girl Jody (17)

Inquest to open after teenager killed in crash at Whaplode

A 17-year-old girl was killed when the car she was a passenger in crashed off the A151 at Whaplode and hit a tree.

College student Jody Smith, of Union Street, Holbeach, suffered multiple injuries in the accident at 9.20pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters administered first aid at the scene but she later died in Pilgrim Hospital, Boston.

The driver of the silver Peugeot 206 saloon, a 17-year-old male from Tydd St Giles, was also taken to the Pilgrim Hospital with minor injuries.

His condition was yesterday described as stable.

Firefighters from Holbeach and Spalding were called to the accident and released the teenagers from the wreckage before they were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Yesterday (Jan 31)floral tributes marked the spot where the Peugeot crashed into the tree.

One read: "Loving you always Jody, missing your every word and action.

"Heaven has gained a special angel. Sleep tight darling.

"Words cannot explain our broken hearts."

Another said: "Jody – a lovely girl. We all love you so much and will miss you forever."

Lincolnshire Police are investigating the accident and are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed it or who saw the car and the manner in which it was being driven before the crash.

Sgt Dave Kay, of the collision investigation team, which is part of Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: "This is a tragic waste of a young life.

"This involved young people between 17 and 25. We are finding there are a lot of crashes involving young people."

Whaplode parish councillor Bob Creese has been campaigning for a bypass for the village for four years.

He said: "Our sympathy goes out to both families. I really feel for them.

"But we need to emphasise again how important it is to address this issue of traffic going through our village and the accidents, injuries and deaths being caused. We need a new road."

Peterborough Regional College student Jody was a former pupil at the Peele School in Long Sutton.

An inquest is due to be opened today.

Police are appealing for witnesses as there were several young people in the area at the time.

Witnesses should ring 01522 558855.
