Tributes flood in for Tulips stalwart Terry Goddard
A CYCLIST killed in an accident on the A16 on Tuesday night was Spalding United steward Terry Goddard.
Mr Goddard (55) was biking along the stretch of road next to Springfields Outlet Shopping and Festival Gardens, Spalding, at around 6.30pm when he was involved in a collision with a green Citroen Xantia.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ray Tucker, Spalding United Football Club executive committee member, paid tribute to Mr Goddard, whose father Jack is the club's vice-president.
He said: "Terry had been a staunch supporter of the club for many years and used to attend both home and away games.
"At home matches he acted as a steward and was known by everyone at the club.
"He will be sadly missed."
Three women and a man from the Citroen were taken to Boston's Pilgrim Hospital shocked but uninjured and the road was eventually reopened at about 10.25pm.
This tragic accident brings the number of people killed on Lincolnshire's roads so far this year to 44 compared to a full year total in 2008 of 51 and a total of 40 at the same time last year.
Police beleive that Mr Goddard, of Gaunt Close, Spalding, was wearing dark clothing and that he did not have any lights on his bike at the time of the accident.
David Hill, president of Spalding cycle campaigners Pedals, said they have not raised any safety concerns over the A16 and recommended that anyone out biking on dark nights wears high visibility clothing and ensures their cycle is well lit.
He said: "It's vitally important that cyclists can be easily seen by other road users."
Mr Goddard's death follows that of Donington woman Julie Panks (55), who died on Saturday morning after the car she was passenger in was involved in a three-vehicle crash on the A52 at Ropsley on Friday.
Mrs Panks, of Holyrood Close, was in the front seat of a blue Mini One being driven by her husband Jim (57), who was seriously injured in the crash and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
l Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area around that time and either saw Mr Goddard or the Citroen before the crash or saw the collision itself to contact them on 01522 558855.

Terry Goddard
Terry was one of the stalwarts of Spalding United FC.
Come rain or shine, he'd be on the big gate, with a smile on his face.
His loud "c'mon Tulips" could be heard by all who stood around the ground, especially by those supporters on the 'Dawkins terrace'.
He was always polite and cheerful and was often spotted cycling around Spalding on his bicycle, a familiar figure with his SUFC scarf and hat.
He was a true supporter of Spalding United, there at every game, home or away.
Jack and Ann, no words can ever say how sorry we are - we will all miss him.
Audrey SUFC Secretary

Thinking of Jack Goddard and his family. The last time I saw Terry was on Tuesday.
He said "hello" as he always did with a smile. My thoughts are with you all. May he rest in peace.
Terri and family, xx
------------------------------------------------------------------------I was really shocked on Wednesday evening when the Spalding United chairman Chris Toynton called me with the sad news that Terry had been involved in an fatal accident on Tuesday evening.
Terry and I were at school together at the Parish Church of England Day School before going on to the Gleed School for boys in September 1964.
His love of football goes back along way when we used to travel to Peterborough and watch the Posh in the 1970s.
More recently Terry was one of those unsung heros of non-league football and was a volunteer worker for Unibond South Division One side Spalding United.
People like Terry keep a local club going by the back room support they give and we used to call the volunteer team the thin blue line.
Sadly it will be that much thiner without Terry shouting the Tulips on to victory, albeit a bit rare these days but Terry never gave up.
Also he was fondly known as Pompey by some of his friends because of his love of Premier League side Portsmouth.
Terry was one of those loveable local characters who always said "hello" as he passed by.
As the flood lights shine on the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field I am sure Terry will be there as one of the brightest lights saying.Come On Spalding.
Terry God Bless, you will be sadly missed my friend.

He was a good man had a heart of gold and I'm sure all who new him from Geest would say the same. Sure the lads would agree we had some good time in the pub. He biked past my house most days always a good morning. Won't be the same not seeing him. Hear's to you my friend beers are on you when we meet again ...

Terry was one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure in meeting.
I remember him better back in the late eighties/early nineties when we played darts at the Punchbowl.
He will be sadly missed by all.
