Travellers' sites chosen

Spalding, Holbeach and Sutton Bridge have been chosen as sites for gypsies and travellers in South Holland.

South Holland District Council cabinet yesterday finally chose the three sites - two permanent and one temporary - in a two-hour meeting.

Permanent sites were selected on land east of the A16 Spalding bypass at Spalding Marsh and West of Holbeach off the A151.

Land of Centenary Way, Wingland, Sutton Bridge, was chosen as a temporary site.

After the meeting council leader Gary Porter said the decision reached was "reasonable" and added that it was not a knee-jerk one.

He added: "Some may think these are not the best sites in South Holland but at least the decision arrived at was a reasonable one."

Councillors had a short list of eight locations to narrow down: Lowgate/Eaudike Road, Quadring; North of A152 Surfleet (off Bendyke Lane); East of A16 Spalding Bypass (Spalding Marsh); East of A16 Spalding Bypass (Drain Bank); West of Holbeach (A151); A1101, north of Tydd St Mary; Off Centenary Way, Wingland, Sutton Bridge and Cranmore Lane, in Holbeach.

The cabinet went through the relative merits of each site before the five members individually decided which sites they were not in favour of.
