Traveller sites confirmed

Calls to reconsider the traveller sites earmarked for Sutton Bridge and Holbeach have been rejected by South Holland District Council cabinet members.

Councillors met on Friday to discuss objections raised in call-in notices submitted concerning the permanent site west of Holbeach and the transient site in Wingland, Sutton Bridge.

Council leader Gary Porter abstained from voting on the Wingland site but the remaining councillors reaffirmed their commitment, despite a 12-point objection raised by Coun Michael Booth and Coun Chris Brewis, who argued, among other things, that a camp would put strain on the town's amenities.

Coun Nick Worth said: "If it was a permanent site it would have been a bigger issue for us to consider regarding the impact on the town."

The safety of road users was the main issue raised in the call-in regarding the Holbeach, with district council chairman Francis Biggadike, Coun Rita Rudkin and Coun Michael Taylor arguing that Northons Lane is inadequate to take additional traffic.

But the cabinet said the site is similar to the illegal camp on Cranmore Lane, where the expected traffic surge on a single track road never came.
