Train horror - woman dead in Spalding level crossing tragedy
A Spalding woman was killed after her car was hit by a train at a level crossing yesterday morning.
Police believe the 30-year-old woman's Rover 216 had gone over the crossing at West Road, just outside Spalding, when she was in collision with a Ford Transit, which shunted her back on to the track.
Two people from the Transit raced to help the woman but as she tried to move her car the automatic barriers then came down and the car was hit by the Peterborough to Spalding train just before 9am.
The force of the impact ripped off the back of the Rover and the woman was thrown from the car. She died at the scene.
There were around 30 passengers on the two-carriage train. None was injured, but the driver was said to have been extremely shaken.
Sgt Dave Kay, of Lincolnshire Police, said ice on the road is likely to have played a major role in the original collision.
Motorists slam county over ungritted surface.
He said: "From what we can gather the woman was having difficulty with the road surface which resulted in a small collision with the van.
"The two occupants of the van, who were not injured, had got out to attempt to help the driver of the car when the warning barriers came down, stopping them.
"The train driver attempted to slow the train, but until we have recovered data we will not know the speed it was going at the point of impact.
"We believe the woman was trying to move the car when the train crashed into the rear."
Passengers were kept on the train for around three hours while emergency services carried out their work and witness statements were taken.
Passengers on trian for three hours.
