Store could be hit by strike

Spalding Argos on Holland Market, could be one of hundreds of the chain's stores affected by potential strikes.

The union Unite was yesterday due to take a protest to the annual meeting of Argos' owner the Home Retail Group, which recently offered a four per cent pay rise to its workforce.

More than 1,100 Argos distribution workers across four regional distribution centres, including one which is in Magna Park in Leicestershire, have been ballotted over the pay offer.

Unite wants more equality between the rewards packages handed out to executives and the below-inflation offer made to its workforce, after the group's profits have risen by 16 per cent from last year.

Unite national officer Jennie Formby said: "We are lobbying the meeting at Milton Keynes and if strike action is taken there could be major disruption, which means Spalding Argos could well be affected."

The ballot closed on Tuesday with the results due yesterday. A further announcement on Unite's next move will be made tomorrow.
