Spalding Ladbrokes robber jailed for 12 years

An armed robber who raided Ladbrokes in Spalding in 2006 has been jailed for 12 years.

Nicholas Smith (58) robbed eight Ladbrokes bookmaker's armed with a gun over a two-year period, during which time he stole 13,378.74.

Smith pleaded guilty to eight counts of robbery and eight counts of possession of a firearm at Harrow Crown Court on September 4. A further 28 offences relating to robbery and firearms offences were placed on file.

On Friday he was sentenced to 12 years in prison, a minimum of six years to be served without parole.

Staff at Ladbrokes in Sheepmarket were terrified when a disguised Smith brandished a semi-automatic pistol and demanded money on November 29, 2006.

A photograph captured by CCTV cameras in Ladbrokes linked him to raids in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Middlesex and Hertfordshire.

He was arrested by armed Flying Squad police officers at his home in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, on January 10.
