Sky watchers take a dim view

Cloudy weather meant a disappointing night for stargazers who turned out for Spalding's Spring Moonwatch.

Organised by the South Lincolnshire Astronomical and Geophysical Society (SoLAGS), the event was held at Springfields Outlet Shopping and Festival Gardens, Spalding.

Around 12 people went along but unfortunately cloudy skies meant the moon was only visible for a few seconds at a time. Members of SoLAGS organised the event as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and were on hand to assist visitors and provide information.

Secretary Martin Anderson said: "It was very disappointing. A lot of work went into organising the event and we only saw the moon about six times for a few seconds at a time. We were pleased to see some visitors and were able to talk to them about astronomy.

"It was a shame we weren't able to see more. On the previous two evenings We are planning to hold another Moonwatch event but at the moment we have no idea when it will be."
