Scan plea after cancer scare

A Holbeach woman is urging others to take advantage of the mammogram service after a breast cancer scare.

Sue Stubbs (54) cannot stress enough the importance for women to go for checks after a routine scan revealed several lumps in her left breast.

Sue has now been given the all-clear after the lumps were found to be non-threatening calcifications.

But Sue said they would not have been picked up if it was not for the scan.

She said: "I do check myself regularly but you can't feel calcifications. They can only be seen on a mammogram.

"I know quite a few women don't go for scans for whatever reason but I would urge them to go. It really can save your life."

Sue, of College Close, had a mammogram in April and was recalled to Boston's Pilgrim Hospital for more tests.

She was shown X-rays of her breast and had a biopsy to find out if the lumps were malignant (cancerous) or benign.

She said: "I could see the calcifications. They are like fine grains of sand.

"I think some women think they will be able to see if there is anything wrong but that is not always the case.

"The hospital told me that 80 per cent of cases like mine are benign but it was still very worrying.

"The biopsy didn't really hurt. I would say it was more uncomfortable than painful but it is a small price to pay if it saves your life."

Sue was given an appointment a few days later to get her results but was relieved to receive a phone call from the breast care nurse a day before to give her the news that the results were clear.

She said: "They try to contact you as soon as possible to stop you worrying.

"I can't stress enough how important it is for people to go. If it is something serious and they catch it early there is so much that can be done now."
