A celebrity could be lined up to kick off Spalding’s festive celebrations next year in a bid to bring more people into the town.
It would mean a big-name taking over Santa’s traditional role of switching on the Christmas lights – the pinnacle of an all-day event of festive fun for the family.
But instead of the usual Saturday switch-on, the big day would probably move to a Friday or Sunday so Spalding’s regular Saturday market would not be affected.
Phil Scarlett, president of Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce, said: “In coming years we would love to be able to line up a celebrity to come in and switch on the lights, but it is something we would need to start thinking about in the first half of the year if it was to happen.
“From a health and safety aspect we would need to swap it to Friday or Sunday so the Market Place could be cleared, and we would probably then have a stage in front of the South Holland Centre looking down through the town where the celebrity would press the switch.”
