'Robust' approach to illegal parking

Police issuing parking tickets in Holbeach High Street have to be robust, an officer has said after a complaint was made when a driver was given a ticket for parking on yellow lines.

Pc Ian Braid, who patrols in the town, told Holbeach Parish Council that illegal parking was one of his priorities.

During the latest parish council meeting Coun Isobel Hutchinson said she had been told about the recent incident where a trader tried to intervene when police gave an elderly motorist a ticket in High Street.

She said: "The gentleman in question – according to the trader – was in the shop for just two minutes while he was picking something up.

"Obviously traders of the town are trying desperately hard to get people to come to their shops, so to start issuing tickets 'willy-nilly' would not help with the situation."

Pc Braid said he has to deal with everyone on the "same level" and added: "In terms of parking – it has been given to me as a priority.

"With regard to other streets there is a bit of discretion to be exercised but with the High Street in particular we have to be robust.

"If there is a complaint it should go through the formal procedure."

He added that it is legal to park on double or single yellow lines if someone is loading or unloading goods and can show clear evidence of this.

Coun Hutchinson added: "It's an issue within the town which does need to be addressed.

"There are people who park there for an incredibly long time and there are people who legitimately need to drop something off or pick something up."
