Reports describes council as excellent
A NEW report has described South Holland District Council as an "excellent" authority.
A Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) compiled by government watchdog the Audit Commission put the council in the top 25 per cent in the country, an improvement on the “fair” score it received in its last assessment in 2003.
Some of the strengths picked out by the commission included the council’s drive to increase the number of affordable homes in the district as well as the increase in waste collection and recycling rates.
Council leader Gary Porter said: “I am very proud of everyone who made this possible.
“It is a great achievement for a small council working to a small budget.
“Our aim since then (the last inspection) has always been to provide the best possible service we can to the council tax payers of the district and I can assure them that we will continue to do so.”
Other areas in which the council impressed the commission included its work with police and others to reduce crime as well as creating and encouraging opportunities for new trade and business.
But despite the praise of the report, the commission also urged the council to make it easier to understand what it is trying to achieve, as well as ensuring all residents can access council services by improving its understanding of who is using them.
Council chief executive Terry Huggins added: “Being judged by the Audit Commission as “excellent” doesn’t make us perfect and we pledge to continue to improve.
“Hopefully this result reassures our community that its council is among the best and has the ability to do even better.”
