Postcards from Westminster - a look inside John Hayes' expenses claims

A LOOK at John Hayes MP's expenses over the past five years shows nothing to suggest he is part of the controversy that has embroiled British politics.

Parliament yesterday revealed details of MPs expenses from 2007/08, albeit heavily censored, following growing turmoil over the claims made by some politicians.

On more than one occasion the South Holland and Deepings MP has referred to his claims as "dull" compared to others and upon searching the information released by Parliament, it appears he was right.

While the House of Commons has been dealt a blow by revelations of claims for moats and duck islands, the most interesting claims in Mr Hayes' 2007/08 expenses forms include a 1.50 receipt for 50 plain postcards, which were sent out as part of a campaign.

Other claims include a 39.99 claim for a heavy-duty stapler, which was part of a larger stationery bill, and just under 300 in claims for newspapers bought between April 2007 and January 2008.

In earlier years, two single use cameras were claimed back at 1.99 each in the 2006/07 forms, while in 2005/06 a claim for two copies of Conservative magazine "The Spectator" was made at a total cost of 5.50.

The expenses also details Mr Hayes' claims on services such as phone lines, taxi fares and mortgage payments on his second home in London, which he is entitled to claim.

The information released by Parliament has been criticised by Freedom of Information campaigners with many of the forms redacted to protect confidential and personal information.

The Daily Telegraph meanwhile plans to print a 64-page booklet featuring details on all MP expenses from the uncensored version of the forms it has in its possession.

For Mr Hayes' reaction to the release of his expenses, see Tuesday's Lincolnshire Free Press.
