Policeman to swap his beat for Nepal
SPALDING'S police Inspector and his wife are taking on a 60-mile trek through the wilds of Nepal to raise much-needed cash for a leprosy hospital.
Paul and Louise Timmins hope to raise at least 2,000 to help destitute people get the treatment they need to beat the disease.
Leprosy is a condition born out of poverty and attacks the nerves under the skin, leading to a loss of feeling if untreated which can then lead to partial paralysis, clawed fingers and even amputation.
Paul and Louise, who are in the process of adopting a Nepalese child, are already in training for the six-day trek in October which will take them through some of the world’s most challenging terrains at altitudes of up to 10,000ft.
After years of working in sales Louise decided to re-focus her life on helping others and put her skills to use at the Christian development organisation.
She said: “I’ve been working for the charity for the past six years and have travelled through India and Africa, meeting people suffering from leprosy and disability.
“It is heartbreaking to see so many adults and children living in squalor, without access to basic facilities such as health care or clean water.
“Many are still ostracised from their communities for a disease which is treatable.”
Any cash raised will be donated to the hospital run by the Leprosy Mission, to be used for services like reconstructive surgery of leprosy-damaged limbs, rehabilitation, mobility aids, medical camps for remote communities and awareness campaigns.
Paul said: “This hospital is a lifeline.
“It serves about seven million people in the area, supplying vital leprosy medication and also offering other services like A and E, maternity care and surgery.
“We are so fortunate in this country and we are asking people to give up a little bit of their hard earned money to help people in desperate need.”
Cheques (made payable to The Leprosy Mission) can be sent to Paul Timmins, Spalding Police Station, Westlode Street, Spalding, PE11 2AF.
