SPALDING'S new community hospital has been given the royal seal of approval.

HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the Johnson Community Hospital on Thursday.

The Princess arrived at the hospital at 10.33am accompanied by her lady in waiting Mrs Timothy Holderness-Roddam and the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth.

She was introduced to local dignitaries including the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lincolnshire County Council chairman Coun Roy Chapman, South Holland District Council chairman Coun Francis Biggadike, South Holland District Council's chief executive Terry Huggins and John Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings.

The Princess also met key NHS Lincolnshire staff including chairman Richard Childs and chief executive John McIvor.

She was escorted onto the Welland Ward by hospital matron Simon Temple, where she chatted to staff and patients.

Mr Temple said: "The visit went really well. It was a very positive experience and an honour to have somebody who is so high profile to open the hospital officially."

After leaving the ward HRH gave a short speech to around 60 people in the seminar room, before officially opening the facility by unveiling a plaque.

She was then presented with a posy by Susan Hensman-Wright, the longest serving member of hospital staff, before meeting Blanche Lentz, operational support manager for Spalding Ambulance Station.

Ms Lentz then introduced HRH to an ambulance crew and she was given the chance to view an emergency vehicle before leaving at exactly 11.30am.
