Petition to save tax office

Fears over the potential closure of Spalding's tax office has led union members to start a petition to save more than 30 jobs.

Some at the Holland Road office have been asked whether they would be willing to relocate to Nottingham as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) looks to centralise operations to save 30m in 2008.

HMRC will hold consultations at Lincolnshire tax buildings in the early part of the new year, with jobs in Spalding and Boston at risk.

About 50 employees use the Spalding office during the week, with around 33 based there permanently. The rest come from other departments on a regular basis.

Staff, most of whom live near Spalding and are Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union members, say they will fight moves to close.

Sonia Wyles, union representative at the office, said: "We want to work here. We help and give advice to local businesses, the elderly and members of a large migrant community in the area not used to our tax laws."

HMRC spokesman Maddy Ratnett said no decision on the fate of Boston and Spalding has been made but consultations at both of the offices are imminent.

She said: "Staff had been asked if they want to relocate to Nottingham some time ago but that does not necessarily mean the office is going to close."
