New scheme for phone mast in Holbeach

Holbeach residents are up in arms over plans to put up a three-antenna phone mast near their homes.

People living in Mondemont Close were horrified to see Telefonica O2 UK's plan for the mast at Carter's Park, saying health risks have not been ruled out.

Plans for a replacement 20m floodlight with three antennae and an equipment cabinet at the Holbeach United Football Club ground have been submitted to South Holland District Council.

In June 2007 residents won their fight against similar plans for two masts in the park.

There is already one mast at the football club and before the new mast can go up permission must be given by land owner Holbeach Parish Council and the district council planning department.

Julia and Robert Ely, who fought against the previous application, have already sent a letter of objection to the district council.

Mrs Ely said: "We objected last time and the application was never officially submitted to the council. We still feel very strongly that we don't want any more there.

"I have been round and spoken to some of my neighbours. Many of them already have health problems and are really worried about the mast. No one really knows what the health risks are with these."

O2 claims the mast is needed to cope with the number of people now using mobile phones.

Community relations manager Angela Johnson said: "We need the mast for additional coverage in the area.

"As for the health implications, we rely on information from the Health Protection Agency and the World Health Organisation, which are both saying there are no health risks from mobile telephone masts as they are low powered radio transmitters."
