A new petition is calling for action after it was revealed the owner of a derelict hotel in Donington seems to have disappeared.

For years the Grade II listed Red Cow Hotel has been falling into disrepair, with repairs only made when there have been concerns for public safety.

Now a resident has started a petition in the hope pressure will be put on South Holland District Council to take action.

Sandra Hilton said: “I had no idea the hotel had been sold and a lot of people in the village will be surprised too.

“I can remember when the Red Cow was a thriving hotel – it used to be a venue for discos and my sister was married there.

“It’s so sad seeing it falling down and it’s such an eyesore in the town.

“We’d wondered what had happened to the plans for it, but now the new owner seems to have disappeared it’s all the more important to raise awareness and put pressure on the district council to do something about it.”

The Free Press was able to speak to the previous owner, Kevin Power, who confirmed he had sold it in 2011.

Mr Power said: “I had plans to build four houses in the back and use the money to restore the hotel, but walls were put in my way every way I turned.

“I’m a businessman and in the end I decided enough was enough and I as good as gave it away.”

A council spokesman said: “South Holland District Council shares the concern about the current condition of the Red Cow Hotel building and that no improvement to the site is either being made or planned.

“However, the building is in private ownership and recent efforts to trace the owner have proved fruitless.

“In light of that, the council finds its hands are tied but will continue to monitor the situation and hopes for all concerned that it improves.”

Residents can sign the petition in Corner House Flowers in the Market Place.
