A Royal Navy veteran honoured for voluntary services to naval personnel, veterans and their families has described his “truly tremendous day” at Buckingham Palace.

Noel Crawford (75), of Sutterton, received his MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) from Prince Charles during an investiture on Friday.

The day was made complete for Noel as he was joined by his wife, Rosemary.

Noel said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day and there were at least 90 other people invested on the same day.

“We got to Buckingham Palace where Rosemary had to go into the ballroom and I went for a briefing before I was called into a waiting room.

“Then my name was read out.

“I moved forward into the ballroom and Prince Charles made the presentation of the MBE.

“He asked me if I was the vice-chairman of the Royal Naval Association and then we discussed the ex-
serviceman’s organisation, as well as the state of the fleet today.”

Noel spent 23 years in the Royal Navy before joining its association, becoming chairman of Spalding branch, then area chairman and a member of the national council over a 28-year period. He said: “I was very, very surprised to get the MBE as it’s one of those things you don’t think will ever happen to you. But Friday was a truly tremendous day and I’m proud to be an MBE.”
