A teenager who was hit by a car on the A17 near her home in Gedney is “lucky” to be alive, says her mum.

Hannah Fletcher (17) was going to a park in nearby Fleet Hargate when she was struck by a car near Beijing Palace Chinese restaurant on Friday evening, spending three days in hospital with a broken arm.

The accident happened just 20 days after Hannah, a child care student at University Academy Holbeach, raised more than £450 by having her hair shaved off for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Hannah said: “I was crossing the road and looking round to make sure there were no cars coming.

“But then a car came from nowhere and hit me after I stepped off the pavement.

“A lorry driver who got out of his lorry and stopped all the traffic was constantly talking to me and holding my head still while I was waiting for the ambulance to arrive.”

Hannah and her mum Tonia Dooney were eventually flown to Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, for treatment to the broken arm and internal bleeding.

Tonia, of Albert Avenue, Gedney, said: “I was at home with my seven-week-old granddaughter when I got a phone call to say that Hannah had been knocked over.

“I went to the scene and there were lots of people around, including paramedics and the lorry driver.

“I couldn’t cry because I didn’t want to upset Hannah and I went with her in the air ambulance to hospital.

“Finding out about the internal bleeding was hard for me because I didn’t know how bad it was.”

Hannah is now recovering at home but still has bruises on her head, arms, chest and legs.

Tonia said: “I’m still in shock over what happened and it will take time to get over it. The doctors said it could have been ten times worse so Hannah is a very lucky girl.”
