More misery as roadworks clog town route

Motorists are facing a further month of misery with more roadworks in West Elloe
Avenue.

Temporary three-way traffic lights are again in operation at the junction with Pinchbeck Road, resulting in jams clogging up one of the main arteries into Spalding town centre.

The works are being carried out by National Grid and are believed to be to resolve previous problems dating back to the beginning of the year when residents reported a series of gas leaks.

According to Lincolnshire County Council, National Grid had intended to start the work on February 26, but were delayed due to bad weather.

It now has until April 17 to complete the repairs.

Motorists have been left frustrated by the most recent roadworks, which follow a series of other closures and traffic management at the junction.

Last December the junction of Pinchbeck Road and West Elloe Avenue was dug up by Anglian Water to fix a leaking water pipe and in January there was a further few weeks of disruption as work was carried out to repair a collapsed drain.

Just a few months earlier there was major disruption as work was carried out by county highways engineers to remodel the junction.

South Holland district councillor Gary Taylor said: “I think people are being quite patient but it is obviously frustrating, especially so soon after all the other roadworks in West Elloe Avenue.

“Drivers are avoiding the area because of severe delays but that is having a knock-on effect on other roads in the town.

“You add that to roadworks elsewhere in the district, such as Moulton Chapel and Weston Hills, and it is very frustrating for drivers and affects the economy as people choose not to come into town.”
