MoD gets more time in wind farm inquiry

A PLANNING inquiry into the building of 13 wind turbines near Gedney Hill has been adjourned for three months to allow the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to gather evidence for its appeal.

The MoD fears that six turbines at Nutsgrove and a further seven at Wryde Croft could prove dangerous for its pilots from RAF Wittering and Cottesmore, who are preparing to serve in Afghanistan.

A three-week inquiry at Peterborough into the wind farms, planned by developers RES and WPR Wind, was adjourned so the MoD can look at information put forward by the two firms.

The MoD and developers are thought to have come up with different radar data over the impact the turbines could have on air traffic teams' ability to monitor flights in the area.

A spokesman said: "The Ministry of Defence still maintains its objection to the development as they will adversely affect the operation of its Watchman and Precision Approach Radar systems.

"This could significantly increase the risk to military aircraft, air crews and people on the ground.

"The inquiry was adjourned so that fresh information brought by developers could be properly considered."

Wryde Croft developers RES said it was disappointed with the adjournment but will work with the MoD between now and March to address concerns.

A spokesman said: "Wryde Croft Wind Farm will have minimal impact on the local environment, community and, if consented, will provide a positive contribution to meeting much-needed renewable energy targets in the East of England."

Campaigning group Fenland Against Rural Turbines feels the MoD argument adds further weight to their fears about the negative impact the scheme would have on residents.

Phil Potts, of the group, said: "Not only should these wind farms not be built because of the effect they will have on local residents, but also because it could detract from the training of Harrier pilots preparing to fly out to Afghanistan."
